Andrew Boyce described Tuesday’s last-minute equaliser as a “huge boost” and “definitely something to build on” for Saturday’s clash against Colchester.
The Iron shared a point with Port Vale at Glanford Park thanks to a 95th minute strike from youngster Kyle Wootton; his first professional goal for the club. Boyce says the result felt like a win due to the dramatic means in which Scunthorpe equalised.“That one point is a huge boost from facing getting no points from the game,” he said.
“We were relieved in the end and it could turn out to be a huge result so it is certainly a boost.”
The defender praised Hakeeb Adelakun and Wootton for the impact they made coming off the bench, with the former setting up the latter in the build-up to the goal.
He said: “Adelakun did well on the right hand side and showed good feet before putting in a great ball for Wootton, who did the rest.
“They’re obviously two good players; Hakeeb has played a lot of games considering his age, while I am delighted for Kyle as it is his first professional goal and he deserves it.”
He added that the 18-year-old’s goal is “arguably the biggest moment of the season so far”.
Boyce returned to the starting line-up having come on at half-time against Crawley, something he was delighted with.
“I am of course pleased to be back in the starting eleven. Alex Davey got a little knock which opened the door for me to start. I hope he is going to be alright and we shall have to see what happens in the next game,” he said.
The centre back underlined the importance of getting results against the teams around the Iron in the table, before stating how “massively crucial” it was to stay in League One this season.
“We have got four games left and we need to try and win every one of them, hopefully starting with three points on Saturday,” he said.
United face Colchester on Saturday, a team the Iron drew 1-1 with earlier this season. The 25-year-old said: “They’re a good side but we’ve prepared for the game like we have all season. We prepare professionally and the gaffer has us doing everything in the right manner.”
