United manager Russ Wilcox praised his players as they got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Coventry City.
They came up against an opposition, unbeaten in seven, and a side who played in excess of an hour with ten men following the dismissal of Reda Johnson for violent conduct, but managed to turn around the scoreline to clinch their third successive home victory.“We’ve needed to bounce back from Saturday and that’s what we’ve done,” he told The Iron Player.
“I thought we were superb tonight. Coventry and first and foremost an outstanding team – a very good team with eleven and still good with ten. That was the turning point of the game, we know that, but we also know it’s very difficult to play against ten men.
“They sat behind the ball, they went 5-3-1 and it’s hard to penetrate. We were patient, moved the ball around the pitch well and scored two great goals.”
Madden notched his fourth league goal of the season with a side footed finish before Lyle Taylor bagged his first for the club, powerfully heading home his strike partner’s cross to give United all three points.
“I was delighted with the goals,” he continued.
“Obviously, you’re always delighted when your strikers score. It was a great finish from Paddy, opening out and striking into the corner. Lyle now has his first for the club and he’s had to be patient and that will give him a massive boost now for him and the team to kick on and get some more.
“I’m just delighted with the group. It was a testing game tonight, mentally more than physically really. What have we got under out shirt? I think we showed that tonight what we are about for our drive and endeavour against a quality Coventry City team.
“I’ve just looked at the fixtures and I’m delighted we don’t go there until February. They’ll be one of the stronger teams we play in the division. We’ve had to weather a late storm, which you always have to do.
“They had two corners and we had to get first contact on both, which we did and that’s great. I’m delighted with the lads endeavour and the attitude and work rate from Saturday.”
He added: “Overall, I was just delighted to get the three points.”
