United manager Mark Robins believes there were many positives to take from Saturday’s home draw with Colchester in League One.
The Glanford Park clash finished 1-1 after former loan man Freddie Sears cancelled out Rory Fallon’s 20th minute header and Robins was happy with a draw on his first match in charge of the club.“I’ve got to be pleased with a point,” Robins told The Iron Player.
“Bobby (Olejnik) did well when called upon, his handling was first class and he set us off on attacks when he could.
“We’ve got to try get on the ball a bit more when we can and move it quicker.
“That means having the technical competence and the bravery and ability to receive it with their back to goal and the opposition trying to get at them.
“There’s plenty of work to do, but we’ve been on the training ground for three days, we’ve had a look at certain things, and there’s scope to do better but there was decent portions of that game where we did well.”
While Robins hinted that himself and his coaching staff would look at bringing in bodies, he insisted he has good foundations in place at the club to build upon.
“We have got a lot of players in there that show a lot of promise and we will look at that,” Robins added.
“The shirt is up for grabs, nobody has gone and cemented a place now."
Rory Fallon, who scored his third goal for Scunthorpe in his fifth appearance for the club, was taken off at half-time after failing to shake off a problem which he picked up in a challenge towards the end of the first period.
Robins revealed he does not know the seriousness of the New Zealand international’s injury.
“I have no idea on Fallon just yet,” he said.
“I brought him off because he twisted his knee and it felt uncomfortable. Maybe it’s a precaution, maybe it’s not, but I didn’t have time to find out what the extent of it was.”
It’s a quick turnaround for Robins’ men, who travel to Staffordshire to Port Vale on Tuesday evening.
“We’ll get some rest on Sunday, get back to it on Monday and review this game and preview the one against Port Vale on Tuesday,” Robins concluded.
“There’s plenty for us to get our teeth into.”
