THE RIGHT PLACE, THE RIGHT TIME

30 October 2012

Returning United boss Brian Laws had a simple message for the fans, saying: “It's good to be back”.

The man, who many feel laid the foundations for the club’s golden era, returned to Glanford Park on Tuesday and immediately threw himself straight back into the job.

At 10.30am he addressed every member of staff at the ground, from the players to the catering staff, and then went on to give a full press conference later in the day to the waiting media.

Speaking then, Laws expressed his delight to return to the club he calls “home”.

“When the chairman asked I had no hesitation,” he told The Iron Player.

“It was the right time and the right place for me to come back.

“There had been talk of me returning before now and at that point it simply wasn’t right.

“Then now I had three offers on the table; but once one of them was Scunthorpe United the decision was easy.”

After a spell in Irish football with Shamrock Rovers, which the Iron boss said had ‘whetted his appetite’ again, Laws cannot wait to get started.

“I am really grateful to Shamrock for the opportunity,” he explained.

“I really enjoyed my time there and had the chance to stay on.

“I also had another League One club who expressed an interest.

“But I live in the town, I know the fans and this club has a place in my heart.”

Laws also revealed that his close personal friendship with the chairman was another factor in the decision to return.

Despite the fact that Steve Wharton has signaled his intention to step aside at the end of the current season, the Iron boss was unconcerned.

“To be honest we have persuaded him to stay on for longer than he originally intended,” he added.

“But for now it is important to concentrate on getting things right on the pitch, and that starts by winning games.

“If you have a winning side then you find the fans want to come and watch you and the rest takes care of itself.

“I am a firm believer in that.”

Speaking about his love for the club and affinity with its fans, Laws had a simple message for the supporters.

“We need you with us to get out of this mess,” he concluded.

“In the past Glanford Park was a ground where away teams knew that they were going to be in for a tough game.

“For whatever reason that has changed recently.

“But it is now our job as a management team and players to change that.

“But we need the supporters with us as we give our all to turn things around.”
