Iron midfielder Liam O’Neil believes that his side are firmly on the up, following an impressive 4-1 win at Leyton Orient, Scunthorpe’s second consecutive away win by this score.
O’Neil managed to get himself on the score sheet at The Matchroom Stadium, to help seal a result that moves United into 16th and six points off the play-offs.While the result suggested that it was a straight forward result for the Iron, the midfielder felt that it was a difficult match.
O’Neil told The Iron Player: “It was, the boys dug deep. It was a tough game at times and the conditions weren't great, but like you say it's a four one victory and we keep climbing the table.”
The Iron have been in great form away from home of late and are now unbeaten in eight matches on their travels, scoring four in both of their last two.
O’Neil praised the efforts of his team mates and also the impact that fellow loanee Tom Hopper has had since joining the club, scoring four in as many games.
He said: “We are (scoring), but I still think we could do more and take more because we still had a few other chances that we could've got goals from.
“Everyone's played well and Hopps has done well getting a brace. We need a striker in form and that is exactly what we have got.”
Another striker who will be hoping to add goals to the team and hit the ground running is new signing Kevin van Veen, who has joined from FC Oss.
O’Neil is excited to be joined by the Dutch striker and has been impressed by what he has seen of his new team mate.
“The club's going in the right direction. I've only met him, I've not seen him play and I've just seen a few clips on YouTube of some of the goals he's scored,” O’Neil said.
“He's scored some nice goals so hopefully he can bring some of that to Scunthorpe."
The Iron midfielder managed to get himself a goal in East London on Saturday, which was his second for the club and believed that he made his own luck.
He said: “I got a bit lucky for it to come back to me, but I saw it and just went for it really. You make your luck sometimes, being in the right place at the right time.
“We will take the three points and move on to the next game now and keep building on it.”
The backing the Iron received also impressed O’Neil and he was quick to praise the fans that travelled as well as the support the club has had throughout the campaign.
He said: “They were brilliant. They weren't quiet at all and it was brilliant in the end so all the boys went over to say thank you because they were top draw, like they are every week.”
