SYERS LOAN TO BE EXTENDED

10 December 2013

United have agreed to extend the loan of David Syers for a third and final month.

The player, who has scored three in his last three games, was due to return to his parent club following the conclusion of Saturday’s fixture at Wycombe. However, the Iron have made steps to extending that loan for a third and final month, but the deal this time will hold a 24 recall clause in his contract.

“We’ve had discussions with Doncaster,” Wilcox told The Iron Player.

“We were hoping for an answer today regarding Dave Syers and we are pleased we have one – and a positive one at that.”

He added: “The other loans run past the Wycombe game, so we’re not worrying about the others just yet.”

Had Syers not been allowed to remain at the club, club captain Michael Collins was in line to make his return to the team, and following two successive reserve games, he is still an option for the side.

“We’re glad Dave can stay because he’s done great,” he continued.

“We also want competition for places and Mickey is on their heels; Dave and Sean McAllister know that they’ve got to max out in every game and be at the top of their game to keep their shirt and that’s how I want it.

“If Dave had to go back, we would have just re-adjusted from there and Mickey is an outstanding replacement. Hopefully Sparrow will be a bit closer as well in the coming weeks.”

He added: “We just cross those bridges when they arrive at the minute.”

“We knew there was likely to be a 24 hour recall clause put in the contract. We’ve not got a problem with that, but it could give us a problem further down the line regarding the Christmas schedule. At the end of the day, he’s a Doncaster Rovers player and we have to respect that.”

Another player whose loan is set to expire is defender Cliff Byrne’s. Wilcox explained the circumstances surrounding his loan spell from Oldham.

“Cliff’s loan expires on December 21 – so after the Morecambe game,” said Wilcox.

“That will be his 93 days and that is all we are allowed under the emergency loan ruling.”

That means that the loanee won’t be able to play for United for the remainder of December, with a decision on his future not needed until the January Transfer Window opens.

“We’ve obviously tinkered with his loan already when we had the break which obviously meant he stays for longer, so he’s one we will have to look at again in January.”
