SEEKING MAXIMUM RETURN

18 April 2013

Brian Laws insists he will still be aiming to win the two remaining games of the season despite Tuesday night's disappointing loss at Bury.

The Iron took the lead on the stroke of half time through Karl Hawley only to see the relegated Shakers take all three points with two second half goals.

Jonson Clarke-Harris scored a spectacular free kick and former Iron loanee Nicky Ajose added a second to condemn United to a seventh successive away defeat.

The boss told The Iron Player: "I think it was all very disappointing because we want to see the players fight, we want to see them hungry but nobody seems to say anything on the park.

"They are as quiet on the park as they are off it and it comes as no surprise that it is only us doing the talking. It has been like that all year and the year before that and it is ingrained in the football club.

"It is ingrained in the dressing room and the only way you can change that is to change the players. We have not been able to do that because of the financial situation that the club finds itself in.

"The one thing that the end of the season gives us the opportunity to do is to change a lot of players and that is something that we will be doing."

Laws added: "I think it is the only way forward. We will have to bring in players who care about this club."

The United boss labelled the match as a poor performance and with fellow strugglers Oldham Athletic winning against Yeovil Town, Laws admitted the fight is all but over.

However, he wants his players to go out there and work hard between now and the end of the season for the club and their supporters.

"it has not ended on a good thing at all on Tuesday night. In fact it has been woeful, disappointing and it has just put another nail in our coffin. We are heading towards League Two on performances like that from the second half," Laws continued.

"I cannot wait for the summer but there are still six points to play and that is something that we will still try and achieve.

"We have got to go and try and win those games otherwise what is the point in turning up. We will prepare ourselves and we will go into them to try and win the game.

"I expect the players to go out there and perform, not just for us but for their own purposes because if they are not here next season they have got to try and find another club."

With the campaign nearing its climax the United manager insists the players need to put in performances that will convince future employers that they are capable of playing for them, if they are not with the Iron next season.

He said: "Their performances will suggest where they are going to be playing next and I expect them to go out there and sell themselves. They have got to perform therefore I am expecting performances from the players."

Laws confirmed that he has not entered into negotiations with any of the players about their future with the club because he was unsure of what division the Iron would be playing in next season.

He continued: "We have been pretty quiet in the way we have been with the players in letting them know how things are because we do not know where we are going at this moment in time.

"However, Tuesday night made it even more difficult for us to survive in the division."

The 51-year-old understands that the task to avoid relegation will be a tough one, but he is adamant that he will still try and do everything he can to ensure Scunthorpe United's future is in League One.

Laws said: "It will take a miracle. It is still mathematically possible but it will take a monumental collapse from other teams.

"Tuesday night was a real body blow for us. I am gutted for the supporters they have been through this for the last few seasons, it is soul destroying and things have got to change."
