RUSS THANKS THE BOARD

17 April 2014

Iron boss Russ Wilcox has thanked Chairman Peter Swann and the club directors for their role ahead of the meeting with Morecambe at the Globe Arena on Good Friday.

Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Bury, United currently sit seven points clear of fourth-placed Fleetwood Town with four games of the regular campaign now remaining as they look to secure a return to League One at the first time of asking.

Wilcox’s side are set to be aided in their cause by the generosity of the club’s boardroom, and the 50-year-old told The Iron Player: “We’ll travel [to Morecambe] on Thursday, and credit to the Chairman and the directors for letting us do that again.

“It costs money, but I think that’s the way we have to do it with four to play. There’s a big trophy at the end of it, so preparation will be very, very good.

“If it was Bury or Rochdale away we’d be going on the day, it’s just that two-and-a-half to three hours where you never know what’s going to happen on the M62. I worked at Burnley, and know all about that.

“If something happens or you get a crash on there, you can be stuck there on a Friday.”

The decision to travel a day earlier leaves the Hemsworth-born manager with less matters to juggle ahead of the clash with the Shrimps, meaning he has been able to focus fully on preparing his side for the contest.

That preparation has taken on a varied form leading up to the match, and Wilcox admitted: “It’s been slightly different this week, as the players who have played most of the games had a fairly light session.

“We had an 11-versus-11 this morning [Monday] which has gone well, then we’ll be off tomorrow before being in Wednesday and Thursday.

“We’ve then had a practice match between ourselves with the other lads who need a bit more topping up, and it was great for the young kids to step in with the pros.”
