United’s newest recruit Theo Robinson spoke of his delight to score within 60 seconds of making his debut on Saturday afternoon at Notts County.
He also discussed how he plans to add to his tally in the near future.From Doncaster Rovers to donning the green Irish Iron third kit just 48 hours later at Meadow Lane, it was a whirlwind move for Robinson after signing on loan just before the 5pm deadline, and he told The Iron Player about his first day on the job.
Robinson told us: “It felt very good to score. The lads and the staff have made me feel very welcome in training so it was nice to get a goal straightaway.
“Towards the end I thought I could have won it, but with time and more match sharpness I think I’ll get better.”
Robinson’s header inside the opening minute of the game was cancelled out by a Gary Jones free-kick only seven minutes later, and after County had taken the lead through Balint Bajner’s strike 20 minutes from time, Niall Canavan’s planted header earned Scunthorpe a share of the spoils.
Analysing the game, Robinson thought the quality of both sides was evident from the get-go, but the Iron’s battling spirit shone through in the end.
Robinson continued: “ It was a good game overall. We took the lead, then obviously from our point of view it went a bit sloppy.
“Saying that, all the boys fought and stuck in and we got the result we needed in the end. There was always the belief there and like I said I thought we could have won it as I was a bit unlucky with two headers; I thought I could have taken one of them down.
“As time goes on and as I become more aware of what’s happening in the game and get to know the players and create an understanding, hopefully I’ll grab myself some more goals.”
With the move from the Keepmoat only finalised last Thursday, Robinson spoke about his reasoning for joined United for the remainder of the season, and how he found his first couple of days at the club.
Robinson said: “The move came about because I wasn’t really playing much at Doncaster and I thought that I needed to try and get on loan and play some games for the last month of the season because I’m out of contract soon.
“I think it’s important for me to just put my name back out there as much as I can.
“Everything was fine settling in here to; all the boys have been chatting to me and the first day I was there it was known as a ‘court day’ where the lads had to pay up all their fines, so it was good to get an understanding of all the fines and things, so it was good.”
Having already featured 40 times this season for parent club Rovers, Robinson has a very good feel of this division already, and he believes as well as a harmonious dressing room, Scunthorpe are very much a team with a clear mission in mind.
Robinson shared: “The dressing room is great. All the lads are good with me and the coaches are very understanding.
“They all know what we want to do and we believed we could have nicked it at the end, namely with my chance that I missed towards the end, but otherwise we create chances and we look good.”
Rounding off with a look to this week’s game with Peterborough, the most important thing for Robinson was to get a load off training under his belt, gel more with his team-mates, and learn the ropes on the pitch in order to fire the club up the table.
Robinson finished his interview saying: “I’ve got a full week now to get to know the lads more, and on the pitch what runs to make and how to lay the ball off to other players.
“Hopefully this week will prove good practice in preparation for next week’s game.
“We are always creating chances, so if we keep going and keep believing we’ll be alright.”
