Scunthorpe boss Mark Robins gave outgoing midfielder Matt Sparrow his best wishes as the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder joined Cheltenham Town on loan.
Sparrow has joined the League Two club, who are currently fighting for their survival in the Football League, on loan until the end of the season.Robins said the reasons behind his departure were down to “balancing the books, as well as getting him more game time.”
The 31-year-old has only featured for the Iron under Mark Robins in the FA Cup, with his most recent appearance coming in the 2-0 loss to Chesterfield last month.
Robins said: “He’s not played a lot this season, but he’s a great lad. He needed to play; he needed some games and Cheltenham were the first club to come in and say they wanted him. It’s a move that suits him.”
Sparrow, who began his career at Glanford Park, had a large role in the Iron’s climb through the leagues under Brian Laws, and then Nigel Adkins. He featured over 300 times for the club between 1999 and 2010, and was re-signed by Laws in 2013, going on to help guide the claret and blue to promotion last season.
“He’s done a lot for Scunthorpe United during his career, as well as earning promotion this time around,” Robins said. “I just hope he goes to Cheltenham and has a really successful loan spell there. He absolutely goes with my best wishes.”
