United manager Mark Robins admitted his disappointment following the 2-2 draw at Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Paddy Madden and Lyle Taylor put the Iron into a 2-0 lead but Dean Leacock’s header and an Izale McLeod penalty ensured a share of the spoils.And whilst acknowledging that Scunthorpe played well for the majority of the match, Robins was frustrated to only come away with a point.
When asked for his reaction to the game, he said: “It’s obviously disappointing.
“For 70, 75 minutes even I thought we were really good and then some frailties showed and we gave them a bit of time.
“We dealt with the first cross that came in (just before Crawley’s first goal) but when the second one came in, we dropped off and let the lad head in unmarked.
“They then got a foothold of the game and I think they could sense that they put us under a little bit of pressure and that was the disappointment.
“I thought we controlled from the start right up until the second goal went in and even after that we had one or two chances to win.”
Madden’s first-half strike was his seventh of the season and Taylor’s 55th minute goal means he now has three in claret and blue.
Robins says the team will take the positives from the game but understands that there are areas to work on.
“It’s never unassailable and that should be a lesson,” he continued.
“But we got some reward for some really good play before that so again you take the positives but we know there are some frailties there.
“I thought the game plan was good. We stuck to that well.
“Some legs tired towards the end but having said that we did put a decent shift in.
“We’ve got to take the point. It’s away from home, they were four unbeaten before the game and we’re now three unbeaten but you can’t help but think it’s two points dropped.”
The boss praised how well his side played from an attacking point of view and was delighted to see two strikers on the score sheet.
And despite having to settle for a draw, Robins says he will take confidence knowing that the team can dictate play away from home.
He added: “I thought there were spells where we opened them up at will, especially in the first-half.
“I thought in the first-half we were excellent and I’m delighted for the two lads that scored.
“Looking at Lyle and Paddy getting on the score sheet was terrific and there were some great balls into the penalty area.
“They controlled it so they’re capable of doing that and that’s a positive from today’s game, knowing we can come away from home and we can dictate play to the opposition.
“So if we can tidy up at the back then we should have a bit of a chance.”
