Iron manager Mark Robins admitted a small feeling of disappointment following the 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.
Luke Williams put United ahead midway through the opening period at Glanford Park before Michael Jacobs equalised for Wigan just prior to half time.Whilst full of admiration for the opposition, Robins feels his side could have picked up more than just a single point.
He told The Iron PlayerHD: “I thought we were really good.
“They’ve got one of the strongest squads in the division and I thought we coped with that really well.
“We were worthy leaders in the game and the goal we scored was brilliant.
“The build-up play between Jamie Ness, Scott Laird and Kevin van Veen and then the finish from Luke Williams was great and gave us a deserved lead.
“They’re always a threat. They’ve got good players but I thought we defended brilliantly.
“Lots of our decision making was good. Will Grigg has been a thorn in our side in past matches and we managed to keep him really quiet.
“They have some really talented players but everything they threw at us, we dealt with.”
The boss heaped praise on his entire line-up, highlighting the fact they were able to remain strong and resolute and still dangerous themselves against one of League One’s best teams.
Robins also believes that the performance will breed a lot of confidence leading further into 2016.
“Luke Daniels hasn’t had a massive amount to do in the game and we were, strong, resolute, solid, even dangerous ourselves,” he continued.
“We created good opportunities and got good deliveries into the box. Paddy Madden was unfortunate and Kevin van Veen was also unlucky with his chances.
“Luke Williams and Kevin tired a little and Paddy had a dead leg so it just took some attacking impetus away from us but Kyle Wootton came on and was lively.
“We’ve got the likes of Stephen Dawson back playing 90 minutes which makes a big difference and Nessy, Bish and the whole back five were all excellent.
“Jordan Clarke had one of his best defensive displays for a while and I thought he was brilliant.
“We’ve got to be happy with a point but having said that, it’s just a slight disappointment that we couldn’t take all three.
“We want the second half of the season to be better than the first. We’ve started pretty well in 2016 so let’s have a really good go.”
The Iron were given a boost ahead of the Latics clash as former loanee Murray Wallace completed a permanent transfer from Huddersfield Town.
The defender impressed during his temporary stint earlier this season and will now be a long term option for Robins to utilise.
He added: “I’ve got to say a huge thank you to the chairman because without him we can’t compete and I know how hard he works.
“He rung me last night to tell me that personal terms had been agreed which was great because it wasn’t just us that were interested in him.
“Murray is a good player, we know what he’s capable of and we’re delighted to have him.
“He’s a good age and gives us real competition in that position now. It sends out a message that we really want to go places and to do that you have to compete for the better players.
“Murray has played in the Championship against good opponents and he’s still learning his trade.
“We’re delighted to have him and a big thanks goes to the chairman that we’ve been able to secure his signature.”
