United manager Mark Robins described the Iron’s performance as “good from start to finish” following the 4-2 victory at Oldham Athletic.
It was Scunthorpe who bagged all three points to pick up their second successive League One triumph.Robins was delighted after the game and told The Iron PlayerHD: “I’ve got a smile on my face – it was brilliant.
“It was a really good performance and I thought we were good from start to finish.
“The only disappointment was that their players reacted first when they scored but there were some really good performances and I think we took the chances that we had really well.
“We could have been 3-0 up before they’d scored a goal and their goalkeeper has made two outstanding saves from Tom Hopper and Murray Wallace. It was just disappointing that they got a couple of goals to take the lead.
“I thought we controlled the game and saw it out really well.”
Gary McSheffrey opened the scoring early on but two quick fire strikes gave Oldham the lead before United got themselves back into a winning position through Tommy Rowe.
Second half goals from Paddy Madden and a sublime individual effort from Kevin van Veen secured the win and Robins was pleased to see his side show the character to recover from going behind.
“They were all good goals but the one from Kevin van Veen was outstanding,” he continued.
“He’s capable of that and it really puts a smile on your face because that’s what the game is about.
“It was a test of character (after going behind) because of the way we’ve conceded goals away from home but if we can perform like that it will give us confidence going into the next few games.
“It gives us a real boost and hopefully we can go into the next few matches with the confidence that we’ve gained.
“I think they only lost once before this game so it’s really nice to come and get the win.”
Despite the success, Robins still believes there are things to work on but was happy to see the players sticking to their pre-game plan.
The manager also issued an update on Luke Williams, who made a return to action for the reserves last Tuesday but wasn’t named in the matchday squad at the SportsDirect.com Park.
He continued: “We were on top of the game in the first half and they’ve just reacted first and the ball has ended up in the back of our net on both occasions.
“There are still things to work on but they stuck to their game plan and got the confidence going.
“You could see that at the end and we managed the game pretty well.
“Luke Williams will be playing on Tuesday (for the reserves) and hopefully I can get him involved for next week.
“He was stiff (after last Tuesday’s reserve match), his hamstrings were tight and he only played for an hour but he’s raring to go. He’s just got to be managed right.”
