RESERVES WIN AT YORK

22 January 2013

The Iron's reserves won 1-0 at York City on Tuesday afternoon.

They emerged victorious through Matt Godden, who scored a 70th minute penalty to clinch victory against the Minstermen.

The spot-kick came about after Godden was felled by the York City shotstopper.

"It was a pleasing performance," Iron assistant manager Russ Wilcox told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

"The young lads did really well and it's just great for their development.

"For instance, Hakeeb Adelakun played and he is still only 16 - while some of the other youth trainees played.

"It was an important game for the lads developing and also those coming back from injury as well."

The match saw David Mirfin and Josh Walker receive a full 90 minutes of game time as they stepped up their recoveries from knee and ankle ligament injuries respectively.

"They did really well and it was a good all-round performance by everybody," added Wilcox.

"I want to give massive credit to York City too for getting the game on.

"They had a home game on Saturday and they covered the pitch straight away afterwards to get this game on, which was great.

"You can do all the training you like but you need that game time."

Trialist Eddie Nolan was set to play a part in the game but pulled out after suffering a tight hamstring.

Manager Brian Laws expressed his delight at the opportunity his first team fringe players got at the game.

The Iron hadn’t been able to arrange a friendly since early December and the chance to improve the fitness levels of those not involved in first team action was greatly welcomed.

“The delightful thing was that we managed to get a reserve game.” he told The Iron Player.

“It’s been a long time coming but York agreed to a game. Their pitch was in good condition so they desperately wanted a game on for their fringe players.”

Laws continued: “(David) Mirfin needed a game under his belt; Josh Walker needed a game under his belt so they’ve both played in this game.

“And then everybody else who’s in and around the team played along with quite a few youngsters.

“We gave a good mixture, there was a good blend there and that’ll get many of the players ninety minutes under their belt and they’ll be pushing again for a place in the team."

Scunthorpe United team: Severn, Lacey, Howe, Mirfin, Grayson, Hornsey, Gibbons, Walker, Adelakun, Godden, Wootton.
