United's unbeaten run in pre-season continued as they emerged 2-1 victors from a highly charged affair at Meadow Lane on Friday night.
The Iron won thanks to goals from Darius Henderson and Jack Dyche.Mark Robins made wholesale changes from the 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday during the week.
Joe Anyon returned in goal, in front of him a back four of Terry Hawkridge, David Mirfin, Andrew Boyce and Dan Harding.
He opted for a midfield four of Gary McSheffrey, Sean McAllister, Isaac Assenso and Noel Burdett, with Kyle Wootton partnering Henderson up front.
It was the home side who had the first effort on goal in the sixth minute, but Curtis Thompson's volley from the edge of the box was poorly struck and sailed over Anyon's crossbar.
After a quiet opening five minutes, County well and truly come to life - this time Jo Stead firing wide across the Iron 'keeper's goal moments after Thompson's attempt.
It took just over ten minutes for Robins' men to register an effort on goal, as McSheffrey tried an ambitious chip from 18 yards out which floated over Roy Carroll's goal.
United almost fell behind soon after however, as Harding's slip allowed Thompson through on goal, but he was foiled by a sprawling Anyon.
The game was almost lit up in the 17th minute, as Wootton brilliantly took Burdett's cross out of the air, which Henderson then struck superbly on the volley, only for Carroll to tip the effort acrobatically over the crossbar.
On the 21 minute mark Stead flashed a dangerous looking ball across the six yard box, but no one was there to tap into an empty net.
The hosts were getting closer and should have taken the lead in the 26th minute, but the dangerous Thompson couldn't direct his close range effort on target.
Henderson, still looking for his first Iron goal, could have got it moments later, but once again Carroll brilliantly denied him, this time tipping onto the crossbar from point-blank range.
After a ten minute lull, it was Thompson who almost brought the game to life once more, twice in a minute. Firstly firing just over Anyon's goal, then moments later striking the post with a diving header from twelve yards out.
The home were piling on the pressure, this time it was Julian Jenner who tried his luck from range and Anyon had to deal with the dipping effort.
However, Jenner wasn't to be denied and on the stroke of half time he lashed home from close range, leaving Anyon with absolutely no chance as he found the top corner of the Iron 'keeper's net.
The Iron should have been level two minutes into the second half, as Henderson spurned a great chance from six yards out after some great work on the right hand side from Burdett.
County almost doubled their lead in the 56th minute, but Stead dragged his effort wide of Anyon's goal.
The home side seemed to be buoyed by Stead's effort and just a few minutes later they went close again, this time substitute Liam Noble fired wide from the edge of the box.
United weren't punished and moments later they got themselves back on level terms. Wootton's effort was too hot for Carroll to handle and he pushed the ball straight into the path of Henderson, who tapped in for his first Iron goal.
Robins' side were pushing for that second goal and on the 70 minute mark, McSheffrey tested Carroll with a low drive from range.
Goalscorer Henderson was replaced in the 71st minute by Fortunate Sithole.
Then the Iron nearly went behind twice in a matter of seconds, as firstly Campbell rattled the crossbar with a glancing header and then Anyon had to show quick reactions to tip the follow-up out for a corner.
It wasn't until the 81st minute that United took the lead. McAllister slid a perfectly weighted pass into the path of McSheffery and he laid the ball back to substitute Dyche who calmly slotted home into an empty net.
Wootton nearly added some gloss to the scoreline in the 90th minute, but he drove his effort wide of the mark.
That was to be the final action and Robins' side continued their unbeaten run in pre-season - a run which continues to gather momentum ahead of the new season.
