Iron midfielder Matt Sparrow is sure the Iron can bounce back after Fleetwood won 2-0 at Glanford Park in midweek.
Two second half goals from the Cod Army subjected the Iron to a defeat, missing the opportunity to get off the mark for the new Sky Bet League One season.“We’re bitterly disappointed not to get some points on the board,” he told The Iron Player.
“We started well and played good up until 70 minutes. We passed it around well and they had a lot of possession and their first goal came out of nowhere and the second one killed us off.
“Our performance was much improved from Saturday, the lads put a lot of effort in, it just wasn’t to be.”
Nearly 2,800 fans were at Glanford Park on Tuesday evening and Sparrow was apologetic to the Claret and Blue faithful who have backed the team in recent weeks.
“I felt sorry for the crowd,” he added.
“They stuck with us tonight and there wasn’t any booing or negativity and we just need to pick up some points for them, the manager and the coaching staff because everyone’s disappointed.
“We’ll pick ourselves up, go back to the drawing board and go again Saturday.”
Graham Alexander’s continued their rise up the Football League by adjusting to life well in the third tier of English football and they are the only team in the division on maximum points.
He said: “They’re a good side, they have played three, won three but we are a good side as well. We just need the first one on the board and it’s going to come, we just need it sooner rather than later.
“You do need that luck. We haven’t started great but we have to roll our sleeves up and grind out a win. It doesn’t have to be a good performance we just need to battle and treat it as a cup final this early on.
“We just need to stick together now.”
Luke O’Neill, who was the Iron’s man of the match against Fleetwood, Billy Kee and Bobby Olejnik made their Iron debuts after joining the club this week following the Preston defeat, and Sparrow thinks the competition will help the side bounce back at Yeovil.
“The new signings have added competition,” he said.
“Luke showed that tonight. He’s a good player and he has come from a good club, while Billy has a proven record.
“They both have quality and hopefully they can help us now.”
Assessing the night, the Iron midfielder added: “We created chances but we didn’t have that rub of the green.
“We have to improve in both boxes. We are better at defending than that and it wasn’t Paddy and Deon’s night either.”
Russ Wilcox and his Iron team will look to bounce back when they travel to Yeovil for Saturday’s fourth clash of the league campaign and Sparrow says the squad will put in the hard work before the long trip south to Huish Park.
Sparrow continued: “We’ll go back to the training ground on Thursday and bounce back on Saturday.
“It’s nice having Saturday and Tuesday games as we can get back on the field to make amends
“We need to check everyone’s in good condition, have a good session and travel down Friday for a huge game on Saturday now.
“I am used to this league. It was nice to get back out onto the pitch tonight too and sharpen up but it’s not nice to be on the losing team and I’m just bitterly disappointed.”
