The Iron are on the road again on Saturday, travelling to Crewe looking to build on successive draws, while also continuing to push for the League One play-off places.
Crewe head into Saturday’s game on the back of a 4-0 defeat at Rochdale, a result that sees them four points above the bottom four and two places below the Iron in 19th.The Alex have won three of their last five home matches though so will head into Saturday’s clash confident that they can bounce back from Tuesday’s defeat.
They will be hoping that top scorer Nicky Ajose can fire them to victory. The striker has found the net eight times this campaign and his goals could prove vital in their quest for survival.
Mark Robins will be able to welcome back Neal Bishop for the trip to Crewe, with the midfielder completing his two match suspension for collecting ten yellow cards.
The Iron boss will also hope to be able to welcome Marcus Williams back to the squad, after he missed the trip to Fleetwood on Tuesday.
The reverse fixture at Glanford Park ended in a 2-1 win for the Iron, with Miguel Llera’s goal in the last 15 minutes giving United all three points.
Loanee Luke Williams opened the scoring for the Iron, before Crewe top scorer Ajose hit back before the break, only for United to win the game late on.
The Iron’s last trip to Crewe in 2012/13 ended in a 1-0 defeat as AJ Leitch-Smith’s goal gave the hosts the win. Scunthorpe went on to get relegated in that season.
The last victory at Crewe for the Iron came in 2006/07, when United came away with a 3-1 victory, despite falling behind to a Luke Varney goal.
Two goals from Billy Sharp, either side of a Jermaine Beckford strike, gave the Iron all three points on their way to winning the League One title.
Out of a total of 69 matches played between the two sides, Scunthorpe have a better record than the Alex, winning 26 compared to Crewe’s 20, with 23 draws between the two sides.
