United manager Russ Wilcox has expressed his delight following the signing of Spanish centre-back Miguel Llera.
The 34-year-old penned a one-year contract at Glanford Park on Thursday morning and will add strength and experience to the United backline.And Wilcox is pleased to have got his fourth new signing of the summer over the line.
He told The Iron Player: “We’re delighted to have got the deal done.
“Everybody saw what he can add to the team in the game against Huddersfield and he’s a good presence.
“He’s 6ft 4in, he has great ability with the ball and he has massive experience so I’m delighted with the signing.”
Llera will bring much needed depth to the defensive department after David Mirfin was ruled out of the start of the season.
Wilcox has highlighted the quality that the former Charlton, Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday player can bring to the team and now says that it’s down to him to stake his claim for a place in the side.
“It’s now down to him,” Wilcox continued.
“There are positions up for grabs and I’ve got pressure on people in every position now just about.
“Miguel adds great quality to the group.
“He showed in the game against Huddersfield alongside Niall (Canavan) that he can play good football.”
Having begun his career in the Spanish leagues, Llera moved over to England in 2008 with MK Dons and has spent the entirety of his time on these shores in League One or above.
And Wilcox feels that the passing ability of his new recruit will be a huge benefit for the club.
He added: “I think he showed his passing ability in the Huddersfield game and now we’ve stepped up to League One, ball retention becomes more important.
“After working in League One before, I know you’ve got to look after the ball better.
“You’re playing against better opposition and if you keep giving the ball back to them then you’re going to get punished and he can add that passing ability to us.
“We won’t be able to do that in every game, we’ll have to mix it up in certain matches but I want to play more football now we’ve stepped up a league and he’ll help us to do that.”
