PLENTY TO WORK ON

10 July 2013

United manager Brian Laws feels there are areas to work on following Tuesday night's 2-1 pre-season friendly away victory at Gainsborough Trinity.

Scunthorpe won through second-half goals from Matt Godden and Jamie Wootton, but Laws felt there elements of rawness from his side.

"I think it was a good work-out for a number of players," he told The Iron Player.

"It wasn't the greatest of performances but we are only two games in and you don't pay particular attention to that.

"At this stage it's more about getting fitness and the physical side of things right.

"We did that on the day.

"Gainsborough are a good side and gave us a tough test.

"We made changes to the team and when you do that you're not going to get the same cohesion and consistency.

"We're not looking for that just yet. We want it at the start of the season.

"There are areas where the players need to work on but that's natural but we've been working far more on the physical side of things than the game play.

"We have got deficiencies that we need to strengthen.

"We had a lot of young players out there on the night and I don't think we should rely solely on them, while they will all have a massive part to play for this club.

"It was a performance that wasn't clinical but we've won the game though we could have done better in front of goal."
