Midfielder Neal Bishop was pleased with the point picked up at Port Vale on Tuesday evening and believes there were plenty of positives to take out of the game.
The skipper gave United an early lead before goals from Ben Williamson and Chris Birchall looked to have condemned Mark Robins’ side to defeat but a late Lyle Taylor header ensured a share of the spoils.Bishop feels the players can take heart from the performance, particularly considering that Scunthorpe had to play the final 17 minutes a man light when Jennison Myrie-Williams was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.
He told The Iron Player: “I think if you go down to 10 men, especially away from home, then you’ve got to be pleased with a point.
“I thought we were the better team throughout and we looked threatening when we got the ball down to play.
“Lyle had one or two chances which on another day he’d probably put away but he scored a great header in the end and from losing 2-1 and being down to 10 men, you’d probably say it’s a good point.
“To score two goals away from home is a positive and when we got the ball down and played, we looked really good and I think we showed that when we’re at it and playing well we can outplay a lot of teams in this division.”
The 33-year-old’s goal was his third in claret and blue after previously scoring in victories at Blackburn and Gillingham.
He was naturally delighted to stick his name on the score sheet and gave a special mention to Luke O’Neill, who assisted both Iron goals on the night.
“It’s always nice to score. Most of my goals throughout my career seem to have come away for whatever reason,” he continued.
“Luke put some great balls in and I’ve gambled and managed to get on the end of one.
“He set up both goals, and also crossed in for my one at Gillingham, and his delivery is fantastic.
“If you make the right runs, you know with him that the ball is going to be there nine times out of ten.
“Lyle scored a great header as well and he’s come back into the team, worked his socks off and on another night he could have had a hat-trick but I’m sure when he’s fully fit he’ll be gobbling up those chances with his eyes closed.”
Bishop picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign during the game at Vale Park and will now miss the visit of his former club Notts County to Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon.
Whilst admitting he’ll be disappointed to sit out the Country clash, Bishop felt the foul he committed was necessary for the sake of the team and is confident that whoever replaces him in the starting line-up will do a good job for the side.
He added: “I hate missing any game so it’ll be massively disappointing not to play at the weekend, especially with it being against Notts County.
“I thought it was a foul I had to give away. They were breaking on us and we were struggling for numbers at the back and unfortunately I’ll pay the price for it on Saturday.
“I’m sure whoever comes in will do a good job.
“We’ll take the positives out of the Port Vale match and hopefully get a massive three points against Notts County.”
