Paddy Madden started the friendly with Huddersfield Town alongside a new strike partner in Lyle Taylor, after Sam Winnall left for Barnsley.
The Irish striker, who joined from Yeovil in January, is in his first pre-season as an Iron striker and he had scored three in three appearances, excluding the Town friendly.He started the game in his usual lively and tenacious manner, attacking towards the Huddersfield fans in the AMS Stand.
He found space and linked up well with Jennison Myrie-Williams early on, soon pressuring from Lee Peltier’s throw to force the visitors to panic and lose possession in their own half.
Gary McSheffrey soon hit a long ball up to Madden, but he was isolated and it went over his head, although he pressured Murray Wallace well, forcing him to clear with a long ball.
Marcus Williams took a short throw in left corner Madden miss controlled and hit return ball out for Town throw, although he was keen to make amends as he looked to get the ball back for the men in Claret and Blue.
The Irish forward used a good turn of pace to make a bursting run down the right channel and Eddie Nolan’s ball was overhit, although he did chase it down well and force Wallace to clear it for a throw. He then used good awareness to take a quick throw for Myrie-Williams to latch onto and run inside, where he was fouled. Trialist Miguel Llera took the resulting set-piece from 25 yards, going close to testing Smithies.
Madden found space and sent Myrie-Williams through on the right flank before chasing back and forcing Town to lose possession.
Defender Llera sent a long ball to madden on touch line, but it was hard for him to control and his header was misguided into touch.
A free-kick was fizzed in by McSheffrey, the ball ricocheted out and Madden smashed a low effort, blocked by the packed bodies in the box.
Again, he linked up well with Gary Mcsheffrey in the second-half’s early stages, looking to lay him off minutes later.
GOAL: Paddy made it four in four pre-season matches, firing Myrie-Williams’ low cross past Alex Smithies from six yards. It was a fizzed ball across the box and Madden lunged to poke the ball home and to put the Iron into the lead after 60 minutes.
Madden soon went in search of a second, taking the ball off Myrie-Williams on the edge of the box and he made a darting run into the box, but he was brought down and his penalty appeal was waved away.
Madden was replaced by Curtis Bateson 13 minutes from time, after a productive workout which saw him score the only goal of the game and he left the pitch to ripples of applause and appreciation from the home crowd.
After the game, Madden told The Iron Player: “It was a good workout for us in unbelievable heat against a good side, so we’re pleased. It was a solid performance.
“Every striker gets confidence from scoring goals and that’s four in four for me and hopefully I can carry it into the Sky Bet League One campaign.
“I can feel myself getting fitter and I’m looking forward to the new season getting started.”
