PADDY CAN'T WAIT

10 January 2014

Upon completing his move to the Iron, striker Paddy Madden said he “can’t wait” to help United’s quest for promotion back to League One.

The 23-year-old forward has signed a two and a half year contract with the Iron after leaving Yeovil Town.

Madden told The Iron Player: “I can’t wait to help Scunthorpe with their promotion push. I’m relishing the chance to play for Scunthorpe and help them do well.”

Last season, Madden achieved promotion with Yeovil Town, as they beat Brentford in the League One play-offs.

The Republic of Ireland international striker scored the opening goal in that game as and he hopes his experiences from last season can help everyone at his new club achieve their goal this year.

“I have had the feeling of promotion last season with Yeovil and I am hungry for more promotion so I am excited by this new challenge,” he said.

“Things were not working out at Yeovil Town so when I got told the chairman and gaffer here was on to me I was interested."

“Scunthorpe are a very ambitious club and I want to be part of that,” Madden continued.

“Winning titles is what I strive to do. I want to win as much silverware as I can. We are in a fantastic position at the top of the league and I want to come in here and help them win the league.”

Iron chairman Peter Swann sold the club to Madden who completed his move to the club on Friday morning after spending Thursday evening down at Glanford Park.

Swann’s ambition and future plans, including the new stadium, convinced Madden that this move was the right one for his career.

Madden explained: “The chairman has told me his plans for this club for the next couple of years and I bought into them straight away.

“It is very ambitious and hopefully I can help this club achieve promotion.”

United’s newest striker, who will take up the number 27 shirt, has already declared himself match fit as Russ Wilcox completes his preparations for this week’s away match at Mansfield Town.

Madden, whose last competitive match came in a 1-0 home defeat to Wigan in November, scored a brace on his debut for Yeovil having been in a similar situation during his final weeks at Carlisle.

“I’m at that stage already I am match fit,” he said.

“I have been in this situation before when I was at Carlisle so I am no stranger to moving clubs.

“It was like this when I moved from Carlisle to Yeovil and I then went and scored two on my debut so I am ready to go.”

Last season’s League One golden boot winner, with 24, believes he can bring a lot of qualities to United’s already strong frontline – including, understandably, goals.

“I can bring more goals to the squad,” Madden told the club’s media.

“Sam is obviously the top goal scorer in the division but I will bring a lot of hunger and desire to the club. I also have great work ethic.”

Even though Madden has not trained with the Iron yet this season he is already focusing on helping United take all three points at Mansfield Town on Saturday – should he be selected by the manager.

“I haven’t spoken to the manager yet regarding Saturday and the possibility of playing but if everything goes well with the remainder of the paperwork then I will, hopefully, be involved in the match day squad this weekend,” he said.

Madden has already represented his country, the Republic of Ireland, and he is hungry to get more caps for his national side.

However, his priorities lie solely with getting the Iron back into League One at the first time of asking, before hopefully helping them back into the Championship.

“Representing my country was one of the proudest moments of my career.”

Madden added: “Hopefully promotion with Scunthorpe this year is my first aim but then that will hopefully bring me a couple more international caps.”
