Remembering past matches played by the Iron on May 23...

Former and current Iron players born on this day: Steve Johnson (1957), Richard Crisp (1972), Dion Sembie-Ferris (1996).

One year and 24-hours after play-off semi-final heartache against Blackpool, the Iron were journeying to Wembley to face the same opponents in the final.

After beating Crewe Alexandra over two legs by a 4-2 aggregate scoreline, a first visit to the twin towers was confirmed and it was Scunthorpe who wanted revenge for their defeat 12 months (and one day) previous, while Blackpool were looking to ensure they didn't lose in the final two years in a row after seeing off Barnet.

The Tangerines went ahead after 40 minutes through Dave Bamber, who squeezed in a header after a game of few chances.

United's response was good and it took just seven second half minutes for an equaliser with Tony Daws arguably scoring one of the better goals at Wembley in that era.

He fired home with his left foot from the edge of the area after good work from Dean Martin and John Buckley to restore parity.

No further goals would follow, so promotion hinged on a penalty shoot-out and after Ian Hamilton, Paul Longden and Matt Elliott all netting, Graham Alexander would see his effort saved by the Seasiders' goalkeeper. At 4-3, needing to score to stay in the game, Jason White blazed over his effort and the promotion dream was over.

Overall playing record for May 23: Played 1, Won 0, Drawn 0, Lost 1, Scored 1, Conceded 1.
