After the Iron’s 2-1 win against Walsall, manager Russ Wilcox confirmed that defender Eddie Nolan was likely to miss Tuesday night’s match.
United host Chesterfield in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but will probably have to do without the Irishman who missed the first league success on Saturday with a neck injury.The Scunthorpe defender joins a growing list of fitness concerns, but Wilcox hopes that Nolan will respond well to treatment and be in contention soon.
He told The Iron Player: “He’s just having acupuncture at the moment as we speak from the doctor. He’s got a really tight neck. It’s from a collision with Bobby (Olejnik) in Tuesday night’s game.
“We looked back on the DVD and Bobby’s come out and cleaned everything up, which you want the ‘keeper to do, but unfortunately Eddie’s taken a big whack on his neck.
“It’s been really, really stiff for a number of days, I think it’s eased off a bit today, but there was no way he was anywhere near playing today.”
That meant that Luke O’Neill came into the right back berth, having been ineligible for the Capital One Cup tie with Reading.
Wilcox felt that Tuesday night would come too soon for Nolan, but remained optimistic with his squad allowed minimal changes for the game.
He said: “I can’t at the moment, not how he is, there would need to be a big improvement. Sometimes there is when it’s only tightness in there or bruising in there, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
Despite the injury concerns that he has at the minute, Wilcox remains satisfied with the squad at his disposal and said it would be unlikely that he would add to it before the transfer deadline.
He also said that he didn’t expect to see anyone leave Glanford Park before tomorrow night, but refused to rule any activity out entirely.
He said: “I don’t think so. I don’t think there will be any movement. You never know, but I’m happy with squad at the moment.
“We are a bit light, but sometimes you can bring people in for the sake of bringing people in, I’m not going to do that.
“If something pops up over the weekend or Monday that we’ll either look at, there may be some movement, but if there isn’t we certainly won’t.”
