NEW TO LEAGUE ONE: BURTON ALBION

24 July 2015

We continue our guide to League One's newcomers...

For Burton Albion, the upcoming season will be the club's first in the third tier in their 65 year history after storming to the League Two title last time out.

With a relatively new stadium, a young and vibrant manager in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and a title under their belts, there is a real feeling around the club that this upcoming campaign can be a very successful
one for the Brewers. They started last season as they meant to go on, winning six out of their opening seven games and really setting the benchmark for the challenging pack behind them. Burton's promotion push was however thrown into some doubt when manager Gary Rowett left the club at the end of October in order to join his former club in Birmingham City. To replace Rowett, Albion turned to former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink, a decision which proved to be a wise one, as the Brewers carried on their early season form to win the title by five points.

Hasselbaink has already begun to strengthen his squad for the upcoming season, with perhaps quite a surprising acquisition, Timmy Thiele, a 23 year old striker from Borussia Dortmund has joined on a one year contract, with the hope of adding even more goals to Burton's already powerful forward line. Plus, midfielder Callum Reilly, who's had Championship experience with Birmingham City, has joined on two year deal.

Manager Hasselbaink is a name that will be familiar to many football fans, with his past exploits for Chelsea and also Middlesborough beforehand. Since his playing days, the Dutchman has had a brief stint in charge of the Belgian side Royal Antwerp. It appears that Hasselbaink has taken to management like a duck to water and has done nothing but impress the Burton faithful since his arrival last November.
