NEW ROLE PLEASES CANAVAN

27 March 2015

Niall Canavan is delighted with his new role of captaining the side and is enjoying the added responsibility.

The central defender has been handed the captain’s armband since Neal Bishop’s injury and Canavan says he is grateful to manager Mark Robins for putting his faith in him as a skipper.

The 23-year-old said: “I’ve enjoyed being given that role and that responsibility.

“I‘m thankful to the manager for trusting me with the captaincy but when you’re out there you are hoping that everyone pulls each other along and I think that’s all we need to do Saturday.”

This Saturday sees the Iron travel to Notts County, who sit two places below Scunthorpe in the Sky Bet League One table.

The Magpies have parted company with previous manager Shaun Derry this week and are being led by caretaker manager Paul Hart for this weekend.

Iron defender Canavan says he knows from personal experience how much of a change a new manager can bring but he doesn’t think it affects his side’s preparations too much.

He said: “It might make a change to them but I’m not sure it does for us. It might throw up a few changes in the team selection but as far as our approach goes I don’t think it will affect us.”

“As we proved last year, things like that can make a big change to a club so hopefully that’s not the case Saturday.”

Notts County go into Saturday’s fixture without a win at home since January 17 and with only point separating the two sides, this weekend’s fixture has added importance for both.

Canavan, who hopes to be leading the Iron out again, believes it is a crucial game for both clubs.

He added, “It’s a big, big game. I think it’s as big for them as it is for us and it’s one of those where we can put a bit of difference between each other again and hopefully we can go there, put in the performance that we want and take the three points.

"All we can do is go there with the right mind-set, be positive and look to come away with the win.”
