Incoming goalkeeping coach Paul Musselwhite has expressed his joy at returning to the club for a third time.
Musselwhite called time on his football career after 27 years when he left York City at the end of last season and enjoyed two spells with the Iron during that time.The 44-year-old played 163 games for the club between 1988 and 1992 and 82 times between 2004 and 2006 and couldn’t be happier with his new role at Glanford Park.
He told The Iron Player: “I’m very happy to be coming back to the club as part of the coaching staff.
“I live in the area, the club is close to my heart and if this job had come up in the past then I’d have definitely been interested.
“I know the club very well and I had two separate spells here so it’s been nice to see a few familiar faces and hopefully I can help, not just from a coaching side of things, but in other ways as well.
“Last year I was a player coach at York and you’ve always got it in the back of your mind that you could be needed to play but this will be the first year that I’ll have no chance of going out there and playing in 27 years so that will be a bit weird.”
Musselwhite played under current United boss Brian Laws during his second spell at the club between 2004 and 2006 and that played particular significance in his decision to take up the goalkeeping coach role.
He added: “I spoke to Brian two or three weeks ago and he told me that an opportunity could be arising so now I’m delighted that we’ve managed to sort it all out.
“I’ve known Brian and Russ (Wilcox) for a long time so I was more than happy to come back and work for them.
“I’ve also known Sam Slocombe for a few years now and I’ve played with him at various charity games so I’m looking forward to trying to get the best out of him.
“I know he did quite well last season, especially since Christmas, and hopefully with my help he can continue to develop.
“There’s no doubt that Scunthorpe are a club that should be in and around the play-offs at the very least in League Two but I see no reason why we shouldn’t be challenging up there for one of the top three places.”
