MUSSELWHITE OFFERED COACH ROLE

6 June 2013

Iron manager Brian Laws has confirmed that Paul Musselwhite has been offered the role of goalkeeping coach.

With Neil Cutler set to depart for League One side Walsall, United legend Musselwhite will step in to replace the former Bury coach.

"I can confirm that we've offered Paul Musselwhie the opportunity to come in," Laws told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

"We have spoken to a couple of other goalkeeping coaches but I think Paul's knowledge of this football club, and the fact that he will give his all, is a major factor.

"We know he will leave no stone unturned and I think he will be a tremendous acquisition for us.

"I'm looking forward to working with him because again, we're bringing another good guy into the football club.

"There is nothing bad about that. The key is getting a group of people together who have a common goal, and that is to do well and give their all for Scunthorpe United.

"The fans need to see that. They will get it from myself and Russ Wilcox, and from Paul Musselwhite too.

"Everyone we have brought in are here for the right reasons."

It will represent the 44-year-old's third return to Glanford Park.

He first joined the Iron in the summer of 1988 and played more than 130 games for the club before being sold to Port Vale four years later.

He returned in 2004 as one of three key signings made by Laws which strengthened the spine of the Iron team and gave them the platform on which to build what proved to a promotion-winning season from League Two.

Released at the end of United’s first season as a League One club, Musselwhite dropped into non-league football before taking up a role as player/goalkeeping coach for Lincoln City.

He has since coached at York City and at Bury, the club at which he ended the last campaign.
