The Iron bounced back from defeat against Bradford at the weekend, beating Bury 2-1 on Tuesday night.
It was an impressive performance from the Iron, who led through Paddy Madden’s penalty, but Leon Clarke looked to have earned the hosts a point.The impressive Luke Williams changed that though, netting a spectacular free-kick to give United all three points and move them into 13th.
Elsewhere in League One, Coventry are still top despite a 0-0 draw against sixth placed Bradford. The result keeps both sides’ impressive runs going.
That gave Gillingham the chance to close the gap, which they did thanks to a routine 2-0 victory at home to Rochdale.
A goal in either half from Bradley Dack and Deji Oshilaja secured a comfortable win and kept the Gills second, a point off top.
Burton moved up to third as they defeated play-off rivals Wigan 1-0, the first loss at home the Latics have suffered this season.
Abdenasser El Khayati slotted home with 15 minutes to go to help the visitors leapfrog their opponents and move to within three points from top.
Walsall also suffered a disappointing night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Swindon, which helped the hosts climb out of the bottom four.
It looked like it would end all square as Tom Bradshaw cancelled out Jon Obika’s goal, but Louis Thompson struck a late winner.
At the bottom, Crewe produced a remarkable comeback to beat Colchester 3-2, although they still prop up the table.
Callum Harriott and George Moncur put the hosts in control, but goals from Ryan Colclough, Marcus Haber and Ryan Lowe turned the game around.
Blackpool’s bad run continued as Ajay Leitch-Smith and Chris Birchall helped Port Vale to a late win on the coast.
It was also a bad evening for Barnsley who slipped into the bottom four after an entertaining 3-2 defeat at Peterborough.
The Posh raced into a 3-1 lead and, despite Sam Winnall’s consolation, Barnsley could not complete the comeback, with Kevin Long also dismissed late on.
Oldham also dropped into the bottom four, losing 5-2 at home to a Southend side that is now just outside the play-offs.
They raced into a 3-0 lead and, although Michael Higdon’s brace threatened an Oldham comeback, Will Atkinson and Luke Prosser added some gloss to the score late on.
Shrewsbury pulled out of trouble though, beating Sheffield United 4-2 away from home and leaving the Blades five games without a win.
It was a similar story at Highbury as Fleetwood claimed a crucial 2-1 over Millwall, with Bobby Grant bizarrely scoring directly from a corner.
Elsewhere, Doncaster enjoyed a 3-0 win over Chesterfield, with Nathan Tyson, Andy Williams and Cameron Stewart all on target for Rovers.
The Iron host Peterborough next, with Mark Robins’ side chasing back-to-back wins and hoping to close the gap to the top six.
