The Iron made it five wins in a row and kept their play-off hopes alive with a 1-0 triumph against Port Vale.
Paddy Madden netted the only goal to ensure that United head into the final weekend with a chance of making the top six.They find themselves level on points with sixth placed Barnsley, with only the Tykes’ better goal difference separating the sides.
Elsewhere in League One, Wigan secured their promotion to the Championship by convincingly beating relegation threatened Blackpool 4-0.
Chris McCann opened the scoring before a Yanic Wildschut brace and a Will Grigg goal sealed their return to the second tier.
Burton are in the driving seat to join them as they scored a dramatic late goal to beat Gillingham 2-1 to maintain their three point cushion.
It looked like they would have to settle for a point with Cody McDonald cancelling Lucas Akins’ opener out, but Tom Naylor scored late to secure victory.
Third placed Walsall can still catch them, and they kept their faint automatic hopes alive by beating Fleetwood 3-1 on Monday.
Tom Bradshaw, Paul Downing and Romaine Sawyers all scored, but they remain three points behind Burton heading into the final day.
Millwall are guaranteed a play-off spot, with Byron Webster’s brace helping them on the way to a 3-0 win against Oldham.
They will be joined by Bradford, who booked their place with a 1-0 win over Southend courtesy of Lee Evans’ strike.
Barnsley currently occupy the sixth and final play-off spot, but their cushion is down to just goal difference now as they conceded late on against Colchester.
Ashley Fletcher netted a brace for the hosts, but a late goal from Tom Lapslie helped the already relegated U’s secure a 2-2 draw.
That means that Barnsley will fight out sixth spot with the Iron and Gillingham heading into the final day.
At the bottom, Crewe are already down, but put a massive dent in Doncaster’s safety hopes as they beat them 3-1.
Rovers need a massive goal swing in order to stay up, and fell to defeat as Callum Ainley, Marcus Haber and Brad Inman struck.
The final day will see either Blackpool, who are currently fourth bottom, or Fleetwood join Crewe, Colchester and Doncaster in League Two next season.
Shrewsbury are safe, despite losing a 4-3 thriller to Peterborough. From 3-0 down they fought back to 3-3, but Jon Taylor’s late winner gave Posh the points.
Chesterfield also sealed their safety by beating Bury 3-0, with Jay O’Shea, Lee Novak and Dan Gardner all on target.
Elsewhere, Coventry beat Sheffield United 3-1 to end the Blades’ play-off hopes. Marc-Antoine Fortune, Andy Rose and Ruben Lameiras were the scorers for the Sky Blues.
Plus, Swindon ended with nine men at Rochdale, but held on for a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Spotland.
Next up for the Iron is a trip to Sheffield United, and Graham Alexander’s side will hope to better Barnsley’s result to climb into the top six.
