JOB DONE

3 August 2013

Following a 2-0 home win over Mansfield Town in the opening game of the season, Iron boss Brian Laws felt it was very much job done.

After weathering an early aerial battering in the first 20 minutes where the visitors aimed everything for the forehead of Matthew Rhead the Iron went ahead through a Matt Sparrow curler.

Then, a few minutes later, hotshot Sam Winnall robbed Stags keeper Alan Marriott and slotted home into an empty net to give the home side a 2-0 cushion at the interval.

However, despite what eventually turned out to be a comfortable home win, the Iron boss admitted that he and his side had felt pressure to start the season well.

"Of course we did," he told The Iron Player.

"After relegation last year and against a team that had just been promoted we were fully aware of the threat they would pose.

"They came out in the first 20 minutes all guns blazing and trying to get that early goal and I have to admit they did dominate us.

"Their fans were singing and the players were obviously up for it after being out of the football league for such a long time that was to be expected.

"But I thought after that first twenty minutes when it was tin hats all round for us, we imposed our style on them and effectively the only problems we caused were for ourselves."

After getting their noses in front courtesy of a deft Sparrow curler the Iron found their rhythm and controlled the pace of the game.

According to Laws that was a direct result of the tenacity and nous of his two midfield generals.

"I thought the two (Sparrow and Michael Collins) of them were superb," he continued.

"Like the rest of the team they were dominated but after that they completely controlled the game and if I am honest I didn't think Mansfield had any answers to us.

"That's a credit to our players and especially those two.

"Too many times last season we were very open and gave away winning positions but today I think the supporters can see that not only do we now have football players who can play the game, but we also have players who know how to win games of football."
