IRON WILL WAIT AND SEE ON DUFFY

23 May 2013

Throughout the close season there has been much speculation surrounding the future for United's prized asset, Mark Duffy.

Manager Brian Laws confirmed following the conclusion of the season that he had taken up a one-year extension on his contract following the club's relegation.

Speaking on BBC Radio Humberside's Sports Talk, Laws admitted that he does not know what lies in store for Duffy, who scooped five honours at the club's end of season awards.

"We still do not know anything yet about Mark Duffy," said Laws.

"I have got to say there are one or two players that do not want to be in League Two, so I also do not want to have any players at the club that do not want to be there.

"I can understand Duffy's reasons because he is a player that needs to be playing at a higher level for the age that he is."

The 27-year-old winger scored seven times for the Iron last season is being chased by a number of different clubs.

The Iron boss said: "We have had interest from Championship clubs.

"The likelihood, hand on heart is that we will have to sell him, but that will mean that I will be able to utilise that money to strengthen the team."

Laws added: "In one respect we could be losing one very good player but on the other hand the money that we generate from him would allow us to bring in, maybe two or three good players."

With the 2013/14 League Two budget tight for the Iron, Laws feels the departure of Duffy could be a significant stride forward in more ways than one.

Even though Duffy, who signed from Morecambe in January 2011, is one of the prized assets of North Lincolnshire, the money that is generated through his sale could be put to good use.

Despite being asked regarding a potential price for the playmaker, Laws gave very little away.

"It all depends on what people are willing to pay," Laws confirmed.

"It is just like selling a house to be honest. You do not always get the right value as what you expect. We hold him in high esteem and we regard him as a very good player.

"There is a value and we know that but we need to get to a good level in value before we decide to sell."

Meanwhile left-back Callum Kennedy could find himself in a new position for the start of the upcoming season, which gets underway on 3 August.

Kennedy, 24, joined the Iron from Swindon Town last summer however injuries hampered his debut campaign at Glanford Park.

Laws admitted the natural left-footed player could find himself a regular in midfield as he has the capability to play in that position.

"Callum is a player that we feel we can push up one. Attacking wise he is very good at going forward, which is good as one thing that I have found hard to get is a naturally left-sided midfielder," the Iron chief said.

"When he has played he has certainly delivered very well with his left foot. He has created goals so we feel there is a potential for him to step up one further.

"It would not cause him a problem because he can do it."
