IRON WILL OFFER ESAJAS DEAL

13 July 2013

United are on the verge of offering a deal to Dutch wing wizard Etiënne Esajas.

The former Swindon man has been on trial with the Iron for a fortnight, showing fans just what he is capable of with a hat- trick against Brigg Town.

Two of the goals he scored that day were from almost identical free kicks just outside the box; something the boss Brian Laws felt his side were missing last term.

He told The Iron Player: "He doesn't need to convince me and last week the fans saw what he is about.

"From dead ball situations he is a real threat, which is something we lacked last season.

"We brought him over to have a look at where he was in terms of fitness but also mentally.

"We are more than happy with what we have seen since he has been here; so much so that we have already agreed a deal in principle with him."

Since making that impressive debut, the Dutchman has missed the last two games with what Laws described as a hamstring problem.

However, the Iron boss does not anticipate it causing any problems during Esajas' medical.

"If you had seen him in training on Friday you would not be concerned at all," he continued.

"Some of the things he was doing there is no way he could have done with a hamstring problem.

"But we will have a thorough medical just to put everyone's mind at rest.

"In fairness he could have played against Sheffield Wednesday but why risk him with three weeks until the start of the season"

Should Esajas sail through the medical he will sign a year deal with the option of a second, and with that in mind Laws admitted he had other motives for not risking the player.

"Had he played on Saturday there were three or four other clubs here to have a look at him," the Iron gaffer explained.

"By not playing him we effectively slammed that door shut.

"We have shook hands on a deal now it is just a case of completing the formalities."

Laws also revealed that Esajas is not the only trialist he is looking to offer a contract to.

Like the Dutchman, Sean McAllister has spent the pre-season looking to earn a deal at Glanford Park.

After impressing in his three appearances so far, the former Wednesday man has done enough to convince Laws he is worth awarding a contract to.

"Like Esajas we know Sean and what he can do," Laws added.

"He is very effective at breaking up play and sees things very well.

"Teams need players like him to enable others to go and play.

"We have started the process and he will hopefully be a Scunthorpe United player by the end of the week."
