The Iron Trust, Scunthorpe United's supporters trust, handed over cheques totalling more than £1,000 to three local charities at Glanford Park on Saturday April 12.
The presentations took place before Scunthorpe United's home game against Bury, as money raised during a charity race night in February was given to Scunthorpe Foodbank, Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Lincolnshire House. The good causes came out top of a poll of members last season.The Iron Trust is a not-for-profit group and works to improve communication between supporters of Scunthorpe United and the club, and to help strengthen its role in the community. It is currently campaigning for a change of legislation to allow a terracing area in the club's proposed new stadium, and pushing for as much fan engagement as possible.
Luke Thornhill, board member and spokesman for the Iron Trust, said: "Part of our remit is to help the wider community in North Lincolnshire, and we're delighted to be able to assist such worthwhile local causes. We believe sport can be a real unifying factor in our area - Scunthorpe United means so much to so many - and it is brilliant to see our members give so generously to allow us to hand over more than £1,000 to key charities. We hope to increase our work with all the charities."
Helen Armstrong, project manager for Scunthorpe Foodbank, said "We are very grateful to the Iron Trust for their support. In the past 12 months, we have fed more than 2,500 local people.
"While most of the food is donated by local people, there is often a need to supplement donations by purchasing specific food items, this generous donation will enable us to keep vital supplies topped up. Many thanks to the organisers of the race night, and to all those who gave so generously."
Belinda Parrington, registered manager for Lincolnshire House Association said: "The money will buy additional equipment for our brand new rebound therapy room. This will enable people with various disabilities to use the trampoline with our specially trained staff. It is an absolutely fantastic facility which enables movement that would not normally be possible for some people. Thank you so much to all at the Iron Trust for your support."
Paul Clark, chairman of Lindsey Lodge Hospice, said: "The generous donation of £350 will help provide more than 90 minutes of hospice care to the people of North Lincolnshire - the time it takes to play a football match. It costs over £3.50 every single minute to run Lindsey Lodge Hospice and although our care is provided free of charge it is not free of cost. The continued support of the North Lincolnshire community, including organisations like the Iron Trust, is vital. Without it Lindsey Lodge Hospice would not be able to provide the quality of care and support that hundreds of patients together with their families and loved ones value so much every year."
