The Iron’s match with Sheffield United on Saturday will be celebrated as ‘Irish Iron Day’ to commemorate the 20th year anniversary of their existence.
We are planning a special Irish Iron party event in our executive lounge on the night, and tickets are on sale now for £20. For more information, call Michelle Harness on 07957 498777 or email michelle@scunthorpe-united.co.uk.In 1994/95, Scunthorpe United supporter Bernard Griffin from Donegal asked Don Rowing, the Chief Executive at the time, for permission to set up an Irish Supporters Club, and for permission to use the club crest on their merchandise.
In return, he promised him that every penny the supporters group raised would go back to the club as sponsorship.
Bernard Griffin, who works for a national bus company in his home country, has supported the Iron since he was a young boy, and he is delighted that the club has dedicated a day to the anniversary of his creation.
Bernard said: “I am humbled and proud that the club I love would honour us in this way.
"Twenty years is a long time and everyone in the Irish Iron feels honoured that the club would not only dedicate a green kit to us, but also designate the nearest Saturday match to St. Patricks Day to our supporters club also.”
Bernard had many people he wanted to thank for making the Irish Iron the synonymous symbol it is throughout the club today, and the dedication of the third strip to the cause is incredibly respectful.
Bernard stated: “No British club has ever before dedicated a kit to an overseas supporters club before and we are very proud that Scunthorpe United have done so.
"We are so grateful to Mr. Swann, Michelle Harness and David Beeby for authorising it.”
This season is the 20th anniversary of Irish Iron, and this season they have in total 110 members, with the group expanding year upon year.
Their merchandise is often on sale around Glanford Park on matchdays, and unlike most supporters clubs in Ireland who raise money to subsidize trips for their members, the Irish Iron donates every penny the football club as sponsorship.
Bernard told us: “Irish Iron exists to support Scunthorpe United in any way we can, with every penny raised through membership fees, sales of our own merchandise and proceeds from raffles etc. going to the Iron as sponsorship.”
