IN REVIEW: MARCH 2016

31 May 2016

We continue a look back at last season, moving onto March...

A victory over Doncaster Rovers, which saw the Iron complete a first league double over the Yorkshire side since 1991 was sandwiched either side of three consecutive draws. The Easter weekend would also see a former face return, but this time in the dugout as Graham Alexander took the role of manager.

The Iron performed well and left the Banks's Stadium with a point against high-flying side Walsall.

Tom Hopper went closest for Scunthorpe in the second half when he had an effort cleared off the line as it looked destined for the net. Rico Henry went closest for the hosts, off the bench, but he couldn't find the net as United notched another clean sheet.

A second successive goalless draw against a play-off contender didn't quite tell the full story at Glanford Park.

The Iron were dominant, both in attack and in defence, but couldn't breach the Gills' back line - and when they did, they were thwarted by the assistant referee's flag.

Paddy Madden had United' best chances and also had a goal disallowed for offside, while Stuart Nelson was in inspired form between the sticks for the Kent-based club.

The Iron got back to winning ways with a convincing and comprehensive win over local rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Another clean sheet to add to the tally saw Rovers fail to register a goal in a domestic campaign against Scunthorpe since 1978/79 with Tom Hopper and David Mirfin both scoring from close range.

In doing so, Hopper also netted the 1000th Scunthorpe league goal at Glanford Park.

DONNY DOUBLE: Tom Hopper celebrates putting United ahead in the sixth minute of their 2-0 success against Doncaster Rovers.

SHREWSBURY TOWN (Kaikai, 21, Akpa-Akpro, 90+5) 2-2 IRON (Wootton, 69, Madden, 78)

The Iron came from behind to go 2-1 up but then suffered a stoppage time equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury Town.

Sullay Kaikai put the hosts ahead, with the Crystal Palace loanee netting his second goal against Scunthorpe in the campaign before Kyle Wootton came off the bench to make an impressionable difference, along with Luke Williams. It was the former Middlesbrough player who set up the United graduate to fire home the equaliser with twenty minutes remaining.

Nine minutes later and the Iron were ahead with Madden seizing on a mistake to round the 'keeper and fire home from close range. Three points were seemingly sealed, only for Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro to net the equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time when his cross curled into the net.

IRON (Madden, 18) 1-1 CHESTERFIELD (Campbell-Ryce, 60)

Jamal Campbell-Ryce netted moments into his Spireites debut to seal a point as Scunthorpe recorded a second-successive draw.

Madden scored a near-carbon copy to his goal a week previous when he threaded onto a through ball from Jim O'Brien to round the goalkeeper and take the ball to within a few yards of goal before firing home.

Campbell-Ryce came off the bench to score with his first touch, firing home in front of the travelling supporters.

Graham Alexander oversaw his side battle to a goalless draw in his first game in charge of the club.

Luke Williams and Jim O'Brien both went close in the first half, with the latter's season ending through injury just before half time, while Tom Hopper went close after the break with United failing to find a breakthrough.

IRON (Townsend, 27, Clarke, 44, Adelakun, 48, Hopper, 52, 76, Madden, 62) 6-0 SWINDON TOWN

The Iron ran riot and romped to a comprehensive 6-0 thrashing of Swindon Town in Graham Alexander's first return to Glanford Park as Scunthorpe manager.

2-0 up at the interval following strikes from both full-backs - Conor Townsend and Jordan Clarke - United breached the Robins' defence four more times in the second half to score six for the first time since November 2003 when Huddersfield Town were on the wrong end of a 6-2 Scunthorpe victory.

Hakeeb Adelakun slotted home just after half time, with Hopper and Madden both stealing in on long balls to smash home. Hopper added the sixth with a header into the corner of the net.

GOAL OF THE MONTH...

The most unintended goal of the season won March's goal of the month in a six-goal romping of Swindon Town. Clarke burst down the right wing and seemingly fired in a looping cross, but it caught 'keeper Tyrell Belford off guard, dropping under the crossbar to make it 2-0 just before the interval.
