IN MEMORIAM: DAVID SLOAN

5 February 2016

The club are saddened to learn of the passing of former United player David Sloan, aged 74.

After signing from Bangor, David made 136 appearances for the club, inclusive of three substitute appearances, scoring 42 goals.

David was a winger of high quality, small, with a natural body-swerve and a deceptive change of pace. He scored on his debut, with a long range shot from about 25-yards out.

One of his proudest moments came in his international career when he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory for Northern Ireland over England in 1963; the first time the side had emerged victorious over the Three Lions in ten years.

It later emerged that for the two full appearances he made for Northern Ireland, he never received his caps for appearances in 1968 and 1970. 34 years after that last appearance and he would be presented those caps at Glanford Park ahead of the final game of the 2003-04 season.

David would leave Scunthorpe for Oxford United and eventually Walsall, making 344 career appearances, 17 substitute appearances and scoring 75 goals.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
