I WISH SAM ALL THE BEST

24 July 2014

Iron manager Russ Wilcox has spoken about Sam Winnall's departure to Barnsley.

The forward left the Iron on Wednesday, joining the Tykes for an undisclosed fee and signing a three-year deal.

Wilcox wished the 23-year-old all the best for the future.

"It's a tough situation that we've had to deal with," he told The Iron Player.

"He's a player who did ever so well last season but he's coming into the last year of his contract.

"He could have walked for free next summer.

"We offered him a new contract, and a good new contract as well.

"There was interest from other clubs who were able to pay more, and that's where we are.

"It's what happens in football, and not just at this football club.

"It happens at a lot of clubs. We have to look forward.

"We have three top strikers at the moment, and Curtis Bateson scored a goal on Wednesday night as well (at Carlton) so he's up and coming. I'm not saying he's ready for first team action yet, but he's not far away.

"I'll have a meeting with the chairman and see where we go from here.

"I'm disappointed to lose a player but the good thing is we'll get cash from it.

"I'll have a word with the chairman and see where we go with that.

"I wish Sam all the best, he had a terrific season last year and did well - along with the other lads - to achieve promotion.

"From our side of it now, we have to move on.

"We have to push on from here really."
