Bobby Grant’s second-half strike gave the Iron a hard-earned victory, and one which Cutler hopes will create a platform for the Iron to build on ahead of the new season.
“It’s another good workout and it’s nice to get the win," he told The Iron Player.
"What we’ve been trying to do is to create that winning mentality in the squad as quickly as possible.
"It’s not all about trying new things and learning things about each of our players, it’s as important to win as many games as possible.
“It’s always a good test when we come here because there a really good side. We're trying to install that competitive nature amongst the lads as early as possible.
“It’s particularly pleasing to come out of the game with a clean sheet especially because we showed a lot of desire in trying to keep the ball from even entering our box.
"If we can get that sort of mentality into our squad now then come the start of the season we’ll be ready and not need a couple of games to reach it."
The matchday squad saw the Iron name five trialists including French defender Yami Cameradie who, despite coming off with an ankle injury, did enough to impress the Iron coaching staff.
He added: “Playing people in different positions to what they're used to and having a large amount of trialists can make it difficult for you sometimes because you don’t know a lot about each other’s games but I think they’ve been fantastic ever since they’ve come in.
“Yami a big lad and he’s a competitor. He still needs to learn about the way we play though and tinker his positions but he’s a good player.
"Sometimes he maybe doesn’t take as much time on the ball as he could and rushes it but we can work on it."
Cutler also praised the impact of Bobby Grant after coming on as a substitute and insists that the better Grant and the side plays in pre-season the greater the rewards will be come the start of the campaign.
“As the pre-season goes on we want Bobby to score more goals to get him fully prepared for the season.
"It’s not just him though because all of midfield and attack need to create more opportunities but luckily time is still on our side so we can still work on that."
