HAPPY TO BE BACK IN THE SIDE

5 March 2013

United right-back Eddie Nolan believes the only way the Iron can secure their League One status for next season is to "win as many games as they can."

Nolan - who made his third start since returning to the Iron in Saturday's loss at Brentford - believes the United boss Brian Laws has guided them to a much more secure place that what they would have dreamt of several months ago.

Following the 1-0 defeat to promotion chasing Brentford Nolan told The Iron Player: "The only way we can secure our place in League One for next season is to win games."

The 24-year-old felt Saturday's result was worthy of a draw and that United were undone by a slight defensive error.

"It is definitely a disappointing result, we thought we should have got at least a point against one of the better sides in the division who are fighting for promotion," he added.

"We have to take our positives from the game but it is certainly a game where we should have taken something from the match."

Nolan, a Republic of Ireland U21 international, felt that United were the better side on Saturday at times and they were unfortunate not to come away from Griffin Park with at least a point.

He said: "We controlled parts of the game and it was harsh that we were unable to hold them out for a point. We need to move on and take all the positives from today into Saturday's match. We cannot afford to dwell on the result too much."

The former Preston North End defender came within inches of opening the scoring half-way through the first half of the match against Brentford.

Nolan - who had a trail with local rivals Doncaster Rovers in the summer - said he was disappointed not to score his first goal for the club since making his return.

He continued: "I cut in from the right wing. I saw a couple of the lads in the middle and we played some one-twos. I think Andy Barcham could have had a shot but he laid it back off to me and I just tried to get a shot off on target. Unfortunately for me it clipped the top of the crossbar, but I was leaning back and I really should have done much better with it.

"I think I should have found the back of the net with my shot to be honest. I just have to move on and put that effort behind me and you never know I might get into another position like that on Saturday."

The Waterford born defender returned to the Iron squad in the closing stages of the loss at Yeovil Town after fellow defender Callum Kennedy limped off through injury and Nolan is delighted that the United boss showed faith in him after not playing competitive football for over six-months.

He said: "I am happy to be back in the side and I always thought - with the way we had been playing - that I would only get back in the side because of somebody getting injured. The lads were doing really well but now I am back in the side I am going to give it my all to ensure that I remain part of the gaffer's team."

United goalkeeper Sam Slocombe caused controversy early on during the game when he handled the ball outside of his area.

Nolan, who was covering Slocombe at the time of the incident, had contradicting views to that of United boss Brian Laws who felt the referee got the decision correct.

Nolan said: "I thought it was a red card but we are delighted he was not sent off because he has played really well again. I do not think it was even close to being in his box but we got away with it. He has done really well over the last few games so it was good that Sam got away it because he is solid between the sticks for us."

The United right-back felt the result did not tell the full story of the match and they now need to focus on to Saturday's clash with Coventry City.

He added: "We should not have lost, I think a draw would have been a fair result and all we have to do is build on what we have learnt today and bring this into next Saturday."

For the second successive game United implied different tactics as they looked for alternative ways to break down their opposition.

The 4-5-1 tactics chosen by Laws helped the Iron to their fourth home win in five matches on Tuesday night when they beat Stevenage 1-0. However, they were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of the same score line against Uwe Rosler's side.

He continued: "On away games we set up differently than what we would have done for a home game. I think the tactics worked really well today even though we lost the match.

"Even though we did not get the right result today it is good that all the other results went our way this afternoon, but it is in our own hands if we want to stay in League One. If we continue to win the games then we are making it harder for all the other teams to get out of the relegation zone."
