Iron manager Mark Robins has stated he was left “disappointed and frustrated” following the 2-0 loss against Bradford City at Glanford Park.
Tony McMahon’s first-half penalty and a goal from Greg Leigh after the break secured the points for Bradford as United suffered a second successive league defeat.Robins told The Iron PlayerHD following the match: “I’m disappointed and frustrated.
“I think we were poor. They were better than us which is something that we don’t normally say here but having said that, it could have been different.
“We had the first opportunity in the game through Neal Bishop early on and their goalkeeper made a great save from Kevin van Veen’s header.
“Then he had another opportunity, finding space in a tight penalty area before dragging it wide.
“We created our own problems because we didn’t pass it as well as we normally do. We didn’t work the ball wide enough and we didn’t do things with purpose.
“They’re a good side in the first half, they come out and fight and try and get on the front foot and give themselves an advantage and that was disappointing because we looked like we could do something.”
Robins elected to play Darius Henderson up front against the Bantams before bringing van Veen on in the second half as the Iron looked to force their way back into the contest.
The boss was complimentary about both but annoyed that neither could have a bigger impact.
“With Tom Hopper being out, we’ve had a mix of Darius Henderson and Kevin van Veen and I thought Darius worked his socks off,” he continued.
“I thought he worked really hard but in working hard, he came out and was less effective then he can be when he goes up against centre halves.
“We needed to get the ball wide and get good quality into the box and in his defence, we didn’t manage to do that.
“Kevin also did well but we just couldn’t find a route back into the game.”
The squad will now switch all attentions to Tuesday night’s fixture at Bury, where the focus will be on making a return to winning ways.
Robins added: “We’ve had two defeats back to back and that’s something that we want to put right because we want to try and get into the top six.
“If we’re serious about that then we have to draw games like the Bradford one when we’re not playing well.
“Bury have come up this season, they’ve got some momentum and they’ve strengthened. They’ve got some decent players in there, whilst being experienced as well.
“They’re trying to cement their place in the top six and we will go there as underdogs but we’ve got to fight and scrap.”
