FIT AND RARING TO GO

24 June 2013

Iron striker Matt Godden has expressed his delight at signing a new one-year deal at Glanford Park.

The 21-year-old penned his first professional deal with United in 2009 and has made 16 appearances for the club to date.

He told The Iron Player: “The gaffer spoke to me at the end of last year about offering me a new deal and that’s happened now so I’m delighted.

“I enjoyed my time off, I’m in good condition and I’m looking forward to getting back out there.

“I’ve been in the gym a lot over the last few weeks and haven’t picked up any niggles or anything so now I’m just really looking forward to the new season.”

With pre-season training due to begin this Thursday, Godden is focusing on maintaining his fitness levels ahead of the Iron’s first League Two fixture against Mansfield on 3rd August.

And the frontman is making no bones about his main aim for the coming campaign.

He continued: “I’m here to score goals.

“Obviously we’re looking to go straight back up so hopefully I can contribute towards that as much as I can.

“That’s the main aim for everybody and for me on a personal note, I want to score as many goals as I can.

“I’ve worked harder in this off season break than I have in any other off season so I’m hoping to take any chance that I get to play in the side.”

Godden is also looking forward to potentially partnering new signing Chris Iwelumo in the Iron’s attack this season and has hailed the impact that he and fellow new arrival Andy Dawson could have on the side.

He added: “They’re both going to have a massive impact with the experience that they will bring.

“Andy has been here before and he knows the club and Chris is an international player who has played at the highest level so they’re both going to bring in massive amounts of experience.

“I like playing up front with a big man that I can feed off because that will enable me to make runs off him and hopefully that’s when the goals will start coming.

“I’m all ready to go now and looking forward to getting back in on Thursday ahead of what we all hope will be a successful campaign.”
