EXCITING TIMES ON THE HORIZON

5 May 2015

Iron manager Mark Robins was disappointed not to finish the season on a high, but believes there are exciting times on the horizon.

The United boss was speaking after the 5-2 defeat to Doncaster and felt his team made too many costly errors, which he hoped his side could learn from next season.

Robins told The Iron Player: “I think we switched off a bit and it can easily be done by players at this stage. We need to be better in terms of defensive capabilities and need to have that desire too.

“I thought Doncaster looked a threat at times, but we gave them the first goal through poor play of our own. We gave them a free-kick and it's led to a goal.

“We've conceded five poor goals, but we draw a line under them and move on to the future because we want to be feeling something different and move forward.”

The Iron boss was pleased to have achieved the main aim of the season, keeping the club in League One, and was keen to push on next season.

Robins felt there was lot to be optimistic about, especially with a new stadium on the horizon for the club, and already has plans in place for the summer.

He said: “It's been tough as I expected. It's been enjoyable though, although I hate losing games.

“I've been saying all week that I wanted to finish strongly and we've not done that, so that's the disappointment.

“We've got to make sure we move forward and have a good summer in terms of recruitment because that is going to be the key.

“It's important to keep that feel good factor around the club because there are exciting times ahead, and that is why I came to Scunthorpe United and we have to look forward to that.

“There'll be a lot to do in the summer, but we will do our best with the finances that are available. Whoever comes will be involved in exciting times at the club.”

The Iron boss was looking forward to next season and was pleased to have finished the current campaign with League One safety.

Robins said: “It's important for us to have got this season out of the way and to finish it in decent shape.

“We have to make the right decisions now in terms of contract renewals and recruiting, so that is our main focus now.

“Next season, we've got to make sure we don't have too many of these days and we want to do things better in the future.”
