CONFIDENT AND BRAVE IN WHAT THEY'RE DOING

29 July 2015

Iron manager Mark Robins has hailed his squad’s performance following the 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls twice took the lead in the opening period but a brace from Paddy Madden ensured United went into half-time on level terms.

Second half goals from Kevin van Veen and substitute Kyle Wootton handed the Iron a fourth triumph of pre-season and Robins was naturally delighted with the result.

He told The Iron PlayerHD: “The performance was really good.

“We conceded two goals from mistakes but once we worked out what to do with (Owls striker Atdhe) Nuhiu, we were better.

“We conceded a soft goal from a set play, which we’d spoken about at the start of the game, and from then on we managed to deal with that.

“We passed the ball well at times and we stuck to our guns. We didn’t panic which I’m pleased with.”

The four goals take United’s tally to 18 so far in six friendly fixtures in what has been a productive set of games in front of goal for the team.

With three of the club’s strikers getting on the scoresheet against Wednesday, Robins revealed his delight at seeing his forwards firing on all cylinders.

“We’re scoring some good goals. There were some great goals tonight, two from Paddy, one from Kevin and one from Kyle Wootton at the end,” he continued.

“There were some great balls into the box, some good interplay and some really good defensive work winning the ball back as well.

“The supporters have been great because I know it’s sometimes heart in the mouth time but we’re trying to play in the right way.

“It was a good workout for us and something similar to what we may face against Burton Albion on the opening day.”

The Iron have been attempting to implement a style of play that is both easy on the eye and successful as preparations for the new campaign gather momentum.

Just 10 days remain until the League One curtain raiser at Burton and the manager stressed it’s now an important time for the players.

He added: “The execution for all the goals was outstanding and the build-up was good for the goals as well.

“We’re playing some good stuff. The players are confident and brave in what they’re doing.

“It’s very easy to put your foot through the back of the ball and kick it as hard as you can and as high as you can up field so you have to work on not doing that.

“I’m very pleased with the players at the moment. We’re just over a week away from the start of the season so the next 10 days will be important in terms of preparation for the Burton game and the whole season.”
