Defender Jordan Clarke was delighted to see his side secure a crucial victory over relegation rivals Crawley Town.
United beat Crawley 2-1 and the full back felt it was a much needed win, and also hoped that it could help the club to safety.Clarke told The Iron Player: “It was very important, purely because we need the points and need to make sure that we are safe.
“We’re very pleased as a collective and the manager is very pleased as it’s a good performance on the back of the defeat on Tuesday night and we’ve got the result we needed.”
Crawley started the day below the Iron, but came to Glanford Park in good form after three wins in their last five, which had seen them climb out of the bottom four.
The Iron defender felt this added more importance to the victory as it ensured that United put more daylight between them and the relegation zone.
Clarke said: “It’s very important purely because of the time of season and there’s a lot of pressure on.
“Anything can happen playing the teams around you, that’s football, but we’ve gone about it in a professional manner today.
“We’ve kept them from scoring as many as we did and that’s the main thing. We would’ve liked a clean sheet, but the win is the main thing.”
Clarke had a massive role in the first goal, with his deflected shot finding the net, although he was disappointed to see it go down as a Ryan Dickson own goal.
He said: “Just before it, I’ve had a shot that I thought was in and somehow they’ve cleared it off the line. I’m almost turning away to celebrate.
“Then, it’s almost a similar situation, the ball’s come to me and, I think it’s on target, but it’s deflected and they’ve got it down as an own goal.”
The Iron defender was a prominent attacking force down the right hand side throughout the game and he revealed that it had been something he had worked hard to improve.
Clarke said: “The gaffer has been on to the full backs in training over the last few days, telling us to get forward whenever possible and then that creates more space and time for the front four, who worked very well today.”
The Iron have now won two in a row at home and Clarke was confident that they could make it three when Port Vale visit Glanford Park on Tuesday.
He said: “We need to go into on the front foot and try and get our goals early, if we keep a clean sheet, that’s a bonus.
“We’re going with the same mentality of we need the points and want to take them.”
