CHANCES TO WIN TWO OR THREE GAMES

7 September 2013

Iron manager Brian Laws has expressed his disappointment at what he describes as ‘another two points dropped’ following the 1-1 draw at Northampton.

Niall Canavan headed United into a second half lead before Cobblers forward Clive Platt levelled proceedings with just over 10 minutes left.

Laws told The Iron Player: "It’s disappointing, as it has been over the last few weeks.

"We’ve created enough opportunities to win two or three games today so it’s probably the best we’ve been in terms of creating chances.

"We knew they were going to have a good spell and it’s about how we defend against it. I thought we marshalled it well for 99% of the game.

"There are a lot of positives to come out of the game but we’re again looking at a case of another two points dropped."

Canavan nodded in Terry Hawkridge’s corner to give Scunthorpe a 67th minute lead but Laws has highlighted the lack of cutting edge going forward.

And the manager was adamant that United deserved much more than just a point from the game.

He continued: "I don’t think anybody could have said that it was an injustice if we’d have won the game today.

"We got the goal that we deserved but it’s just unfortunate that we couldn’t hold onto it.

"We’re controlling games but we’re just not finishing our chances off. If we keep playing like that however, we’ll be alright.

"I thought we did very well defensively and David Mirfin and Niall Canavan were brilliant.

"Northampton will be there or there abouts this season but there’s going to be a time when we stick a few goals away and get a big score."

The Iron were dealt blow during the early stages of the first half when Christian Ribeiro had to be substituted due to a knock.

But Laws was pleased with how his players coped with the reshuffle after Hawkridge replaced the Welshman on the field.

He added: "Even though we lost Ribeiro, it didn’t really affect us too much but it was disappointing because he was outstanding in the week.

"Eddie (Nolan) slotted in at right back and I thought McAllister did well in midfield.

"(Etienne) Esajas looked a real danger going forward and I can see him getting stronger and creating problems for the opposition.

"I don’t want us to turn into draw specialists though, I want to be winning games but if we continue not to lose games away from home then that’s a good basis to work from.

"We could so easily have maximum points right now and we’ve certainly had the opportunities to do that so we’re doing the right things.

"We could have scored three or four today so it’s just about finding that final touch in the box."
