Lyle Taylor believes the win over Coventry was both a good result and a good performance at Glanford Park as the Iron made it three home wins in a row in all competitions.
United beat the Sky Blues 2-1 after goals from Paddy Madden and Taylor sealed their second league win of the season.Frank Nouble put the visitors ahead in the first half, before Madden finished confidently to equalise in the 38th minute. Taylor’s header put the Iron 2-1 ahead midway through the second half, which proved to be the winner.
The ex-Sheffield United man said it was a good performance in a tough game against the ten men of Coventry, following Reda Johnson’s sending off.
“It was a good result and a good performance with it,” Taylor told The Iron Player.
“It was a tough game after they went down to ten men, they wasted a lot of time and spent time making it hard for us to play in any part of the pitch where we could influence the play.”
He continued: “It’s a really good result for us, we are happy with how it went and onto the next one.
“You could see a little bit of anxiety creep in during the last ten minutes. When you have a bad result like we did on Saturday, there’s a bit of anxiety to want the whistle to go.
“Thankfully we saw it out and hopefully that sends the fans home with a smile of their face and ready for another big one on Saturday.”
Taylor spoke about the Iron performance over the 90 minutes and he believes the home side were on top before the sending off of Reda Johnson, despite being a goal down.
He said: “I think we were on top before they scored. Then all of a sudden they set their team up to keep the ball and it was tough for us after that.
“But then they had the man sent off, rightfully so. The referee saw him head-butt me and I didn’t need to make a meal of it. That’s good protection from the referee.
“From there we dominated in chances created, maybe not in possession of the ball but in chances created. We tried hard to shut them down and force them to play long passes, which they did a lot.
The game on Tuesday night saw Taylor given his chance to start alongside Madden upfront, and he was very pleased that the manager had given him the opportunity to show what he could do. He didn’t disappoint, scoring the winner and his first goal for the club.
Taylor said: “He said to me yesterday, ‘this is your chance’. So the way I see it, if you are given a chance and you don’t take it, there is no one else you can blame other than yourself.
“I’m thankful for that chance. Hopefully I will be able to stay in the team and between me and Paddy and the rest of the boys, we will develop that relationship, score more goals and win more games.
“It was instinctive. As good as my header was, Paddy’s was probably a harder technique. That ball coming across you is so easy to miss completely. To tread on it. Two good goals. Two very well worked goals as
well so we are happy with that.”
Next up for the Iron is Leyton Orient at Glanford Park, a game that Taylor described as a massive one for the Iron.
He said: “It’s massive. It’s going to be a really tough game for us.
“I don’t really care what their results have been, they’re a very good side as you can see from the last two years they’ve had in this league.
“It’s going to be another tough game for us but if we work hard and we put ourselves about the pitch and create as many chances as we did today, we are in with a very good chance.”
