The Iron’s assistant manager Ned Kelly provided a squad update ahead of the Iron’s League One fixture against Crawley on Saturday.
Firstly, Kelly confirmed that striker Billy Kee has returned to the club following the expiration of his loan with Mansfield Town.The forward joined the Nottinghamshire club in January, but has since returned to United and is back in training with the first team ahead of the weekend.
Kelly said: "Billy is back at the club after his loan ended at Mansfield Town. We're disappointed he didn't get more game time there.”
Kelly also provided an injury update on the squad as the Iron prepare for two games in four days at Glanford Park.
The assistant manager first commented on centre-back Niall Canavan, after the defender missed the MK Dons defeat during midweek.
Kelly said: “He is progressing okay. He just didn’t feel right in the warm up, which was a big disappointment for everybody. He has trained and we will assess him on Friday, but as it stands he should be okay.”
Kelly also discussed midfielder Neal Bishop ahead of the clash with Crawley following his surgery on a hernia injury, but he has been back in training with the first team and Kelly believes he will be back in contention soon.
He stated: “Bishop has been alright this week. He has had a bit of last week’s training and he has been involved again this week. Whether he will be ready, it might be just a little too soon for him."
He continued: “Again we will have a look at him, but the gaffer will make a decision. He has been okay in training and has had no further issues with it. The game might just come a few days too soon for him.”
Sam Slocombe has been back and training with the first team too after his injury and is looking to get back into the squad.
“Sam is back in full training and obviously he is looking to try and get back involved,” Kelly said.
Kelly said the Iron are currently awaiting news on loanee Liam O’Neil, with the West Brom midfielder currently being assessed by the Premier League club’s medical team.
He also commented on fellow midfielder Dave Syers, who came off the bench against MK Dons, and Kelly praised Syers for his desire and hard work to get back in the side.
He said: “Liam (O’Neil) is back with West Brom at the moment, being assessed by their medical team. Our medical team have assessed what has gone on, spoken to West Brom, and now Liam is back down there for another assessment and we will see where it goes from there. We don’t know if he will back, but we will speak to West Brom and make a decision.”
He continued: “It is great for Dave (Syers). He has worked seriously hard. He has outdone the medics as nobody thought he would be back, certainly in the first team arena. So credit to Dave and his desire to work hard and get back fit. So he had a few more minutes which is good to see.”
