Iron manager Mark Robins hopes the victory over Fleetwood Town will help to raise positivity levels amongst his squad.
Paddy Madden’s second half strike proved to be the difference between the two sides as United claimed three crucial points.When asked for his thoughts on the game, Robins revealed to The Iron PlayerHD: “It was relief more than anything.
“We were nervy and we want to try and excite supporters but it doesn’t happen all the time and League One is like that.
“We talk about being positive which is easy to say but it’s difficult to transfer it into a performance and get any sort of fluency.
“A win is a win, we’ll take that all day long. We’ve not played as well as we could have but we’ve played miles better and lost and there should be a knock on with the positivity now – it should raise it.”
The single goal triumph also saw Scunthorpe pick up their fourth clean sheet of the season following a solid defensive display.
While admitting the win is just another building block, Robins thinks it could help to turn the team’s fortunes around.
“We’re looking for a lot more but it’s building blocks,” he continued.
“We’ve got another win at home and we’ve just got to slowly turn things around. There’s nothing better than a win to help your confidence.
“We’ve got an away game next week and we’ll see if we can turn that around and make it two wins on the bounce.
“Fleetwood came for a point. They’ve recently parted ways with their manager and announced three new signings before kick-off so we weren’t sure how they were going to set up under a different influence.
“We were in a position where we were trying to grind a result out and we did it. It’s a good starting point so we move on, onwards and upwards.”
Tommy Rowe arrived at Glanford Park on loan from Wolves prior to the game and was included in the starting line-up for his first Iron appearance.
Defender David Mirfin also came in for his first start since mid-August and Robins was pleased with how both played against the Cod Army.
He added: “Tommy is a good player and he’s someone who we’ve been after for a while. We lost out on him a few weeks ago but have now managed to bring him in.
“He’s desperate for some football and played in three positions against Fleetwood, proving equally adept in all three.
“He only had a couple of days’ worth of training with the players but he will be a decent signing for us.
“Mirf also deserves all the plaudits he gets because he did exactly what we wanted him to do.
“We’ve been conceding too many goals and there’s still bits we need to tidy up but I was delighted for Mirf because he’s worked hard and been ready to play.”
The manager finished by issuing a quick line on Murray Wallace, who was substituted at half-time.
He said: “He picked up a whack and had to come off. We were looking at making a change and being a little bit more proactive to try and get a bit more forward impetus.”
