A REAL ALL-ROUNDER

31 May 2013

Manager Brian Laws has spoken of his delight at signing full-back Andy Dawson.

The Hull City defender will join the club for next season in a player-coach role, and Laws is pleased to have completed his first signing of the summer.

He said: "We're delighted to sign Andy. I think he's a quality player who has all the ingredients of what we're looking for in terms of personality.

"The dressing room will benefit from his character no doubt, and he possesses some real quality on the pitch.

"We have a real all-rounder there for us.

"He will also do some coaching for us, which is something he's wanting to develop in the later part of his career.

"All in all, we're delighted to get him on board.

"His contribution to the team will be massive. He'll be very vocal and he will support and give encouragement to the younger players.

"I see him in the same mould as the likes of Peter Beagrie, who played until he was 40.

"Andy has been very fortunate in his career that he's never taken any serious injury, as Peter was in his day and that allowed him to play longer.

"He's a great professional and looks after his body well.

"I can see him going on for a fair few years yet."

However, with Dawson coming in, Laws admitted that the club won't be able to offer a deal to out-of-contract left-back Tom Newey.

"There is always a downside. Tom is a terrific lad but unfortunate we couldn't offer him a deal," he added.

"We want to wish him well. He was fantastic for us last year and did everything possible to try and earn a contract.

"If our finances were in a better shape then I'd be doing that anyway."

Laws is optimistic of making a further signing in the coming days.

"We're hoping to conclude one in the early part of next week, which is encouraging," he added.

"This is about bringing players who we feel will embrace what we want to do.

"We want all the right ingredients to form a good team together.

"Experience, craft and guile is key.

"Once we have the signature we'll announce, but I know what the player can bring to this football team."
